KUALA TERENGGANU: Mentri Besar Datuk Ahmad Said has refuted allegations by the state Opposition that oil royalty payments from the Federal Government had gone into unnecessary development projects.
Ahmad said the Opposition had deliberately capitalised on the issue to cause confusion among the electorate here, especially with the coming parliamentary by-election for the Kuala Terengganu seat.
“We have utilised the oil royalty money for noble causes, and to enhance our infrastructure and for students’ education,” he said after launching the media centre for the Jan 17 by-election.
The centre, with broadband-enabled computers, printers, fax machines and press-conference rooms, was jointly set-up by the Information Ministry and the state government.
Ahmad said the state government also planned to invest the oil royalty in fixed deposit accounts for the future of Terengganu folks.
“We have the sense of commitment to prudently manage the oil royalty money so that it benefits the locals in the long run,” he added.
Ahmad said the state government had successfully negotiated with the Federal Government to have the bi-annual payment, made directly by Petronas, to the state government.
“The Opposition is trying to distract voters by using the oil royalty payment as its campaigning tool.”
