Information Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek said the concept would enable viewers in the two East Malaysian states to watch their respective regional news for 30 minutes through the normal analogue transmission.
“In a month or two, we will be introducing this ’breakaway news’ segment during prime time broadcast from 8.30pm in Sabah and Sarawak,” he told reporters during his visit to the Kuala Terengganu by-election media centre today.
He said the concept would be extended to the other states when RTM switched completely to digital transmission from the analogue system in 2015.On the restructuring of RTM’s TV1 and TV2 channels which have caused dissatisfaction among some quarters, Ahmad Shabery said this was only temporary as RTM was working towards full digital transmission.
Under the restructuring exercise, TV1 operates as a news and information channel with 49 news broadcasts daily and the other informative programmes include talk shows and documentaries.TV2 carries programmes like entertainment shows, movies and dramas.
